SHOOTING STARS:
Night Sky Photography for Amateurs Have you ever been interested in photography or the night sky? Whether it be to capture an image of the stars or just observe them, this is for you. The summer months is when the Milky Way begins to be visible, so this is a good way to prepare for stargazing and getting to know your universe a little better. This class is for amateurs. No telescope or fancy equipment needed. You’re welcome to bring your cameras to ask specific questions (during or after). Even the most basic modern (from the past 10 years onward) cameras are capable of capturing thousands of stars, with a little patience and know how. Taught by photographer Daniel J.H. McDonald. His experience began with trying to find a barely-visible Comet Panstarrs in March in 2013 and quickly evolved into a night sky obsession that has led to five years of refinement, 150,000 pictures, and a National geographic publication. Daniel is our artist for this year's poster! |
SUFFOLK ARTS DISTRICT INITIATIVE
Have you noticed OnePast7 on the corner of Main & E. Washington? Inside you'll find artists leasing space to create and sell their work. Opened in December 2017, OnePast7 quickly filled and expanded into a second site. It is ground floor of Ed Beardsley's, owner of the Plaid Turnip, new non-profit Suffolk Premier Arts Retail Culinary initiative (SPARC). Through this non profit Beardsley is working to make his vision of an arts district in downtown Suffolk a reality. Come learn about how this initiative began, how SPARC is developing, and what Beardsley hopes to accomplish in Downtown Suffolk. |
PLANT PROPAGATION METHODS
Master Gardener Liz Maurer teaches ways to start a new garden for free using plant propagation techniques. Instilled with a love of gardening and nature by her parents, she has been blessed with wonderful places to garden for 40 years. After a career in banking, she returned to her passion and began a garden design and installation business. She received a Masters in Horticulture from Virginia Tech in 2005. |
BUTTERFLIES IN THE GARDEN
